Middle and Eastern European Animation

Zagreb school of animation in Croatia is part of Zagreb film company. The animators developed the definition of animation by stressing the aesthetic and philosophic aspects.

1950’s-1980’s
1950-52: WWII disney style satire
1956: studio of animated film
Golden Age (1957-1980) spanned 3 waves:
  1. (1957-62)
  2. (1965-69)
  3. 1972-80)
Due to cell limitations, they didn’t do full animation, in the film we watched, notice how they didn’t have him walk to locations, instead he would magically appear.
Graphically simple and reduced drawing form, bring a new stylised movement. Up to 3x less drawings per animation, no text and a synaesthesia of music/sound and image.
Thematic: modern, everyday and universal.
Expression: stylized, minimalistic, limited, reduced, cross-over between art and cinema.
