Character Turnaround

This is the development of the character that I intend to model based upon the sketch that I have in my sketchbook, (Concept 10).

Monster Miner Doodle

I’m going to be doing a series of illustrations on photoshop by creating images out of scribbles on my graphics tablet.

I tried to make it into a little mining type creature that was cradling a fluorescent bar to light the way.

“FrailFred” Walk Cycle

I wanted to have Fred walking, hunched over, and rather flat footed so he is stamping his way.


  • Started from the feet up
  • Got one foot moving as I wanted then did the opposite for the other foot (make notes on values used because it is very hard to remember and tedious to keep checking)
  • Check the leg movement and adjust if needed
  • Adjust the degree of hip swivel
  • Hunch the back and the shoulders
  • Animate the movement of the shoulders
  • Make the fingers curl in on themselves to look like the man has arthritis
  • Get the arms to swing starting at the top, down to the wrist (adjusted last)
  • Tweak any awkward movements

Mad Scientist

Initially I tried to make this model straight from this sketch.

So I thought it would be better to plan the character out more thoroughly…

…and this is the initial result.

I also found a very useful article on how to produce brick textures fairly quickly, which I’ve cited it below, along with an article that told me how to create the lightening ball, however, when I was rendering the plasma ball it wouldn’t appear, so I converted the paint effect to a polygon which resulted in a big glowing blob. I went back to the previous file, lessened the glow, and converted it again, which resulted in a nice level of glow for the plasma, then I imported the scientist.
